All that to say, there's no way just one photographer can tackle all the demand in Flagstaff, Arizona. When I began my photography business, I was so nervous that I would never stand out among our photography community in Flagstaff, Arizona. But as I've leaned into our community and built up my own business what I've found is that we need one another more than we need anything else and our unique styles definitely benefit the variety of couples that are planning their wedding in Flagstaff.
I think familiarizing yourself with some of our top photographers in Flagstaff is important to find the best fit for your aesthetic, personality and investment. In an effort to support that research, I'm excited to give some focus to some those I work alongside in the Flagstaff wedding photography community! Today, I'd love to introduce you to Monica Saaty, one of the most well-known wedding vendors in Flagstaff.
Who are we talking to and and what service do you offer in the Northern Arizona Wedding Vendor arena?
Hey Jess! First off - thank you so much for including me in this wonderful series. I love talking about photography and business with other amazing creatives like YOU!
I am a wedding and portrait photographer located in Flagstaff. First and foremost a lover of the great outdoors —I love hiking, camping, kayaking and exploring anywhere with dusty backroads and wide open views. When I began photography, I loved shooting landscapes. I have always been fascinated with the diversity of Arizona. I now focus on combining the grandeur of these landscapes with the intimate relationships of my clients.
Nature is my muse, and the great outdoors is my canvas. I find inspiration in the raw beauty of landscapes, the changing colors of the sky, and the harmony of nature’s elements. My photography sessions often take us to breathtaking locations where we can embrace the beauty of the world around us. Whether it’s a mountain peak, a tranquil forest, or a serene lakeside, I believe that the backdrop of nature adds depth, character, and a touch of magic to every photograph. Through my lens, I capture not just people but also the symbiotic dance between humanity and the natural world.
How long have you been creating in your space and what made you decide to offer these services for Arizona couples planning their weddings?
I’ve been running a full-time photography business for more than 12 years and I also lecture part-time in the Photography and Visual Communication Departments at Northern Arizona University. I began shooting weddings in college for the experience. Wedding photography encompasses a multitude of photography genres. I love the challenge technically and I very much enjoy getting to be involved in such an intimate date. I fell in love with the community, creative process, and wedding industry in Northern Arizona. Providing a quality service truly fills my bucket.
Where are you based currently and what areas or Northern Arizona do you serve?
My little family and I live in Flagstaff, but I travel all around the state of Arizona for photography. There are five primary destinations that I frequent to document clients. These locations include Flagstaff, Sedona, Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Antelope Canyon. Each of these destinations is near and dear to my heart.
What is your favorite thing about your business?
I love that I was lucky enough to make a career out of being a creative. My favorite part of my business is that it allows me to spend time outdoors and meet wonderful people from all over the world. I truly love the visual arts because I feel the creative process centers me. The act of looking through the viewfinder allows me to be totally connected with what I see. The experience of really noticing the world around me is the greatest inspiration of all. I truly love my line of work and welcome any opportunity to create meaningful images.
What is your favorite review or piece of feedback you've ever gotten from a client?
I often have clients tell me that I feel like a close friend or family member by the time their wedding day rolls around. I truly value the clients who have trusted me to document one of the most intimate days of their lives. I take pride in the relationships I build and work we put into planning together. I think it really pays off when they are able to relax and be fully present on their wedding day.
What is your favorite thing that you offer / create / make ? Why?
While I LOVE documenting clients, I enjoy even more when the memories we make are brought to life through prints and/or photography products. We make it a point to print a few family photos every few months for the walls of our home so our children can enjoy them as they grow. It is easy to forget the simple joys of photo albums or seeing your family photograph hanging on your wall. But I believe that there is something extra special about taking the time to slow down and hold an album in your hands that looking at pictures on the computer just can’t replicate. These heirlooms are cherished for generations.
What is the trickiest part about being a Flagstaff Wedding Vendor?
I think the toughest part about being located in Northern Arizona is navigating the seasons, weather, fire restrictions, and location access. Since I specialize in outdoor photography, I am very much at the hands of these factors. It took many seasons to understand how to navigate, plan for, and accommodate these factors.
How would you describe your "Dream Client"?
A dream client for me would be someone who values and appreciates the artistry and craftsmanship behind each photograph. They would have a clear vision of what they want to capture but also trust in the photographer's expertise to bring that vision to life. I LOVE this collaboration process. This client would have excellent communication skills, providing detailed input while also being open to creative suggestions and ideas. They are someone who values the natural world; traveling; and spending time with their loved ones.
Is there someone in your industry that inspires you to keep going when things get tough or to create outside of your comfort zone?
Rather than someone in the industry, I’d love to give some recognition to my family - specifically my mother and husband. They have continued to be my biggest inspiration; support system; and travel companions. My mom has supported my love of the arts from day one. She took time to truly nurture my interest and helped me build confidence in my work. My husband has always supported my dreams and crazy ideas in any way possible.
Who are some vendors you feel could use some more recognition in Northern Arizona?
The teams at Violas and Serendipity - they are such an amazing support system for vendors in Northern Arizona. Brandon with 7000K Sound has also gone above and beyond to foster a sense of community for vendors around Flagstaff. Jen Paul of Life Passages positively impacts every person she interacts with. I truly look forward to each time we work together. Leslie Allred also inspires me as a creative; a business owner; and a wonderful mother. I could go on… as we’re so blessed to have such amazing people providing wedding services in Northern Arizona.
